Healthy Chocolate Banana Breakfast Smoothie

I’m a big fan of smoothies for breakfast, especially when packed with protein and a healthy dose of Omega 3s. I generally don’t venture out of my regular fruit smoothie rotation, but I was craving something chocolatey and came up with this recipe, which is a variation of my banana nut smoothie. As a vegan, I opt for pea protein over whey and particularly like Epic Protein by Sprout Living because of its minimal ingredient list and no artificial flavouring. Flaxseeds aren’t a must but their nutty profile enhance the peanut butter taste. (If not use to consuming, start slowly and build up gradually as flaxseeds’ high fibre content can be difficult for some to digest.) I use cacao powder instead of cocoa because it’s a superfood chocked full of flavonoids, antioxidants, vitamins and minerals, though the two are interchangeable. To counter the cacao’s bitter taste, I add Medjool dates as a natural sugar substitute, making this smoothie not only delicious but good for you, too.


  • 1 1/2 bananas, frozen
  • 2-3 ice cubes
  • 2 Medjool dates
  • 1 cup oat milk or milk of your choice
  • 1/2 cup water
  • 1 scoop pea protein powder (2 tablespoons)
  • 2 tablespoons cacao powder
  • 1 tablespoon natural peanut butter or other nut butter
  • 1/4 cup flaxseeds, ground
  • Pinch of salt

Place all ingredients in a high-powered blender. Blend for 60 seconds until smooth. Add more water if you like a thinner consistency.
