Toronto Water, Garbage Rates on the Rise
Toronto garbage collection and water rates are set to increase above the inflation rate in the new year.
City council has approved a 3.75% hike in fees, to kick in Jan. 1.
The increase is considered interim until the 2026 budget is finalized and approved.
Households are charged for garbage collection according to the size of their garbage bins. In 2026, the initial yearly fee, when factoring in the 3.75% increase, will amount to:
- $317.85 for a small bin, up $11.49
- $385.86 for a medium bin, up $13.95
- $524.06 for a large bin, up $18.94
- $607.86 for an extra-large bin, up $21.97
In addition to residential garbage pick up, these fees fund the collection of organics, yard waste, oversized items and electronics, as well as city-wide litter collection, community environment days, street and park bins, drop-off depots and the ongoing care of closed landfills.
Starting Jan. 1, the City will no longer manage recycling for residential customers, as per provincial legislation.
For water, the interim change means the average household using 230,000 litres of water per year will pay an additional $40 annually, for a total annual cost of $1,118.
The City offers relief programs to provide rebates on water and solid waste charges for eligible low-income seniors and people living with a disability.
