Etobicoke Postal Codes First to Lose Direct Mail

Residents in two Etobicoke neighbourhoods will be among the first to no longer receive door-to-door mail.

Properties with postal codes starting with M9V and M9W will get their mail through community mailboxes starting later this year.

This will affect some 18,000 addresses. Another 118,000 are impacted nationwide.

The areas chosen are next to neighbourhoods that already use community mailboxes.

Canada Post says it will engage with the affected communities as it identifies suitable locations for the shared mailbox sites.

The Crown corporation plans to eliminate all household delivery over the next five years, with different areas moving to community mailboxes each year.

Approximately four million addresses currently receive door-to-door delivery.

The move to community mailboxes is part of larger restructuring efforts to improve financial sustainability. Canada Post has accumulated more than $5 billion in losses since 2018. Eliminating home delivery is expected to save the corporation $4 million a year.
