Top Features Buyers Want in a Home: Survey

Buyers are looking for better, not bigger, homes, according to new research from the National Association of Home Builders.

The property size sacrifice comes amid the growing desire for home ownership, which has become more expensive in recent years’ higher interest rate environment.

Homebuyers have shifted their overall design preferences, too, with 80% of those surveyed rating the following property amenities as ‘essential’ or ‘desirable’:

  • Laundry room
  • Patio
  • Energy Star windows
  • Exterior lighting
  • Ceiling fan
  • Garage storage
  • Front porch
  • Hardwood flooring
  • Full bathroom on the main level
  • Energy Star appliances
  • Walk-in pantry
  • Landscaping
  • Table space in the kitchen

Technology features are becoming increasingly popular, most notably security cameras, wired home security systems, programmable thermostats, video doorbells, multi-zone heating, ventilation and air-conditioning (HVAC) systems, and energy management systems.

Other home features that have seen strong growth in popularity over the past 10 years include quartz or engineered stone for kitchen countertops, built-in kitchen seating, exposed beams, lighting control systems, and outdoor fireplaces and kitchens.
