Health Canada Recalls Baby Cribs and Kitchen Stoves
Health Canada has issued two recalls in recent months related to furniture and appliances for the home.
More than a dozen cribs made by Canadian manufacturer South Shore Furniture have been recalled over an entrapment hazard.
Health Canada says the spacing between some crib slats is between three to 5.5 millimetres too wide, creating a dangerous opening where a child could get stuck.
It is believed 16 cribs have this issue. Those impacted include the Balka crib in pure white, black, navy blue and sage green, and the Dylan and Yodi cribs in pure white. They can be identified by the model number and order number found on the label on the inside bottom at one end of the crib.
Walmart, Canadian Tire, Home Depot and Wayfair are some of the retailers known to the sell the cribs.
South Shore has not received any reports of incidents or injuries related to the product recall; however, Health Canada advises consumers to immediately stop using the cribs.
The Quebec-based ready-to-assemble furniture specialist is offering refunds. They can be requested through the company’s website.
More recently, Health Canada has issued a recall of 300,000 Samsung slide-in electric ranges in Canada due to risk of fire hazard.
According to the national health agency, people and pets can accidentally activate the front-mounted knobs on the ranges.
The Canadian recall follows the one stateside, which came after videos started circulating online of pets starting fires on the stove.
Health Canada has received more than 57 reports of incidents and seven reports of injuries.
It is believed 19 range models are affected. The recalled model numbers are listed online and can be found on the inside upper left corner of the range door or inside the storage bin on the bottom of the range.
Health Canada warns consumers using the recalled ranges without knob locks or covers to use caution and ensure children and pets are kept away from the stove, to not leave objects on the range when not in use and to check that the knobs are off before leaving home or going to sleep.
Oven range owners should contact Samsung to receive a free set of knob locks or covers if they have the effected product.
